We have a lot of characters: Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman, who has a very uncomfortable and complicated relationship with her boss, Rick Vigorous, who is a walking bundle of neuroses and sexual anxieties. Well, okay, there's plenty of text for analysis. Evidently this book is taught in graduate schools. Evaluating it from a writer's perspective, yeah, Foster knew his way around language, and he does lots of clever things, even a few funny things. The Broom of the System was David Foster Wallace's debut novel. That's not to say I don't like any of it, but it has to be really, really good and/or brilliant. I am not a big fan of meta-fiction, post-modernist fiction, or experimental fiction. And her cockatiel, Vlad the Impaler, has suddenly started spouting a mixture of psychobabble, Auden, and the King James Bible, which may propel him to stardom on a Christian fundamentalist television program.įiercely intelligent and entertaining, this debut novel from one of the most innovative writers of our generation explores the paradoxes of language, storytelling, and reality. Her beau (and boss), editor-in-chief Rick Vigorous, is insanely jealous. Her great-grandmother, a one-time student of Wittgenstein, has disappeared with twenty-five other inmates of the Shaker Heights Nursing Home. Lenore works as a switchboard attendant at a publishing firm, and in addition to her mind-numbing job, she has a few other problems. The year is 1990 and the place is a slightly altered Cleveland, Ohio, which sits on the edge of a suburban wasteland-the Great Ohio Desert. At the center of The Broom of the System is the bewitching (and also bewildered) heroine, Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman.

Gamma waves are the fastest moving brain waves and are present in an active and alert state. Interestingly, beta and gamma waves are often observed on electroencephalogram (EEG) during a controlled focus meditation. Zen meditation includes some controlled focus meditation, where the focus is directed on something like one’s breath. The differences come in not only the actual practice of meditation but also in the changes noted in brain waves. Some of the more common schools of meditation include Zen, mindfulness, and Transcendental Meditation (TM). Most people lump all meditation and mindfulness practices into the same category, but there are actually some pretty interesting differences. However, in the consistent practice of zazen, the belief is that the awareness experienced during meditation will eventually extend into all activities, whether it’s eating, washing dishes, or walking. In the beginning, you are likely to experience intense feelings of physical (and mental) discomfort, experience boredom, doze in and out, lose sight of your breath, and so forth. Each time a thought arises, we just don’t follow the thought and return to the breath.” One inhalation and one exhalation at a time. “Zen meditation focuses on posture: open shoulders, upright spine, soft belly, and on the ground (chair or cushion). Zazen may sound simple, but anyone who has meditated knows how difficult it can be to remain still for five minutes, let alone several hours a day. On the surface, the practice of zazen is quite easy-it consists of many hours of seated meditation. The main practice of Zen Buddhism is sitting meditation or zazen. Koshin Palley Ellison, a Muse Meditation Teacher, Co-Founder and Co-Guiding Teacher of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, explains that practicing Zen meditation is to “take refuge in awakening, receptivity, and connection. Seeing true nature is becoming a Buddha (2). The core of Zen Buddhism is based on these 4 tenets from Bodhidharma’s writings:Ī special transmission outside the scriptures. Suzuki helped to popularize its philosophy in the late 19 th and early 20 th century (3). In 1004, Daoyun, a Chinese Buddhist monk, wrote Records of the Transmission of the Lamp which is viewed to be one of the guiding books of Zen Buddhism (2).Īlthough Zen Buddhism had been introduced to European cultures before the 1800s, Japanese scholar Daisetz T. Zen Buddhism spread to Korea in the 7 th century, and then to Japan by the 12 th century. Bodhidharma is credited with introducing Zen Buddhism to China in the 5 th century, although Buddhism itself had likely been known in China for centuries before. Zen Buddhism is an Asian religious school of thought that originated more than 1000 years ago. But where does “Zen” come from? Zen 101: A Brief History of ZenĪlthough “Zen” is the Japanese word for “meditation,” Bodhidharma, an Indian monk, is largely viewed as the founder of Zen Buddhism (1). For others, they might picture a nature scene, garden, or even someone meditating. When you hear the word “zen,” what comes to mind? You’ll likely think of words like peaceful, serene, meditation, and calm. What's the most effective way of cleaning? If you’re concerned about teeth sensitivity, look for toothbrushes that offer a gentle/sensitive setting or a softer brush head. Will an electric toothbrush damage my teeth?īrushing correctly will clean effectively without causing any harm. They help to clean a bigger surface area, as any fluid in the mouth is forced between the teeth and gum line by the powerful vibrations. Sonic toothbrushes have diamond or oval-shaped heads and can reach up to 24,000 to 40,000 vibrations per minute, making their motions faster than oscillating models. They have a brushing action of 2,500 to 8,000 rotations per minute and have more directional changes than a sonic brush. Oscillating toothbrushes have round heads that can reach the back of teeth and effectively dislodge plaque. There is little evidence to show which is more effective. Sonic refers to the side to side vibrating motion of the brush filaments, while oscillating refers to the rotating and pulsating movements of the brush head. "They are effective at removing plaque because they’re designed to gently massage teeth and gums correctly, with many now featuring a pressure sensor that warns you if you’re pressing too hard." What's the difference between sonic and oscillating? "They do the work for you and their bristles move in more directions than you could move the brush yourself," says Dr Wadia. However, dentists recommend going electric. If you’re vigilant about looking after your teeth, both manual and electric toothbrushes can keep them healthy. Are electric toothbrushes better than manual toothbrushes? Most modern models feature two-minute timers, multiple cleaning modes and pressure sensors to help ensure optimum brushing. Electric toothbrushes are battery-powered brushes that make oscillating or sonic vibrating movements to remove plaque build-up, debris and bacteria. Beaten and exhausted, he exits the dark room similar to a slave dungeon while entering the daylight of outside as the Muslim call to prayer echoes all around. Priest cleverly rigs an electric light switch in the room to kill one of the officials who guard him and ambushes a second to escape capture. Refia is neutral to all elements and status ailments. Verdict: Great abilities, decent (and stackable) Trust Master Reward, useful Limit Break, solid general healer for a while to come, may not have some of flashier moves that soon to be released healers have but Refia is a good and solid pull. If you’re not careful you’re going to end up with huge globs of tiles that you’ll never be able to clear. The hardest skill, though, is the tile management itself. You’ll need to get good at working your way to vowels and back out again. Being that you can go in any direction, merely looking for words isn’t enough. I was pretty pleased when I got “savory.” Then you’ll need to detect those words in a sea of letters. It’s all fine and good to have a bunch of 3-4 letter words like “pie” or “cool” to bust out, but if you’re ever going to get anywhere you need stronger stuff. But not here! You live and die by your own abilities, which is pretty interesting since the game requires a diverse set of skills to really excel.įirst and foremost you’ll need a solid vocabulary. Typically in a game like this there would be a built in hint system, or maybe you’d be able to earn some “cheats” in the course of playing. And using rarer letters in your words (like J, X or Z) will also clear an entire row out for you.Īs I’ve already mentioned, my favorite thing about SpellTower is the lack of hand holding involved. Longer words clear more area and score more points. Heck, you can even spell words backwards!ĭepending on the game mode, you’ll either have a timer to score against, or every time you clear a word a new row of tiles appears. You can drag your finger vertical, horizontal, diagonal – every which way. To clear tiles you need to spell out words. SpellTower is sort of similar to a match-3 game, but instead of tiles with different icons, here they all have letters. So if you’re looking for a game with undo’s or hints or what-have-you then you should probably keep looking. Personally I prefer it that way, but I know not everyone does. There’s nothing here to make you feel better about yourself if your word finding skills aren’t up to snuff. It’s probably worth noting at the head that SpellTower isn’t the kind of game that’s going to do any hand holding with you. By the time I’m done playing I feel so dumb that I’m pretty sure the state should take away all the knives in my house and I’m not sure how I’m able to tie my shoes in the morning. It’s humbling to go through life relatively confident that you’re at least pretty smart only to “relax” and “enjoy” some time with a word based game. SpellTower does a phenomenal job of reminding me of two very true facts. SpellTower is a rewarding word game that’s as much about tile management as it is vocabulary The concept car also had a television camera mounted in the rear that could alert the driver to traffic by way of a TV screen on the dashboard. When you opened the door, the seats would slide back automatically. The Centurion included a bubble top roof, and in the back it featured revolutionary winged fenders that would eventually be features of Buicks and Chevrolets in the late 1950s. The two-tone paint job and white-walled tires presented a slick image. The body of the Buick Centurion was made from fiberglass, and the interior looked like an airplane cockpit, an inspiration from the jet age. The design of the car was used to create the 1958 Lincoln. The vehicle's backup lights were modeled on jet tubes, and the headlights were retractable. Its chassis was designed so that body shells could be quickly swapped for other body shells. The car was created by Bill Schmidt, Lincoln-Mercury Division's chief stylist in the post-World War II era. The Futura was handmade by craftsmen from Italian car design company Ghia at a cost of $250,000. The car's styling was ahead of its time as well, including a slick grill, trim work, and fins that would eventually be found in GM cars. The car features, such as push-button seats and windows, would be standard in future cars. The Buick XP-300, created by Charles Chayne, vice president of engineering at General Motors, packed a 335-horsepower V8 engine that could run on either gasoline or methanol and may have been able to reach140 mph. The cave-dwelling citizens had worshipped deities who had been vanquished long ago, their names now forgotten, their effigies defaced. It had been a trading post, selling its principal resource, fresh water, which came from frequent flash floods and was husbanded in a network of dams and cisterns. In centuries past, Petra had been home to thousands. The cold desert wind sidled through the crags and canyons of the abandoned city, never louder than a sigh. ''That's just what I'm trying not to think.'' ''Aye, but if it is,'' McAllister said, finishing his sentence, ''they have us in the ideal spot for an ambush.'' ''This can't be a trap,'' David said to Sergeant McAllister. They aimed their weapons in the direction an attack was most likely to come from, should one come: above. The paratroopers broke off into small units and found what cover they could in this smooth-bottomed natural amphitheatre. Sergeant Mal McAllister, his number two, relayed the order. He gave the order to his men to fan out in a defensive formation. On the steps of the Treasury, Lieutenant David Westwynter lowered his lance and checked his watch. Essentially a decorated cave mouth, it exuded a dusty silence, the breath of the ancient darkness within. Its colonnaded and porticoed entrance towered before the soldiers. Directly ahead lay the rendezvous point, a Romanesque temple hewn out of the face of a sandstone cliff and known as Al Khazneh, ''the Treasury''. Each man held his ibis-headed ba lance at the ready, reassured by the warmth he could feel through the handgrips, the charge of divine essence that glowed within the weapon. The path sloped steeply, uneven underfoot. The paratroopers moved carefully, wide-eyed in the near-total darkness of the gorge. Above, the sky was a distant strip of starshine, a glittering river meandering between black banks. In places it was so narrow they could barely walk two abreast. They filed through the Siq, Petra's eastern gateway, a sheer-sided gorge hacked out by a long-ago earthquake and smoothed by water erosion. Within minutes their chutes were buried and they were jogging towards Mount Hor and the dead city that nestled in its shadow, Petra. The twenty men turned into the wind and dropped to the desert floor as silently as thistle seeds, each making a perfect five-point landing. Night stretched itself over the eastern Arabian desert, the light from a clear full moon creating a finely filigreed landscape of silver and black.Īt an altitude of 1,000 feet a twin-engine Griffon-3 transporter plane released a stick of paratroopers in alternating door technique, ten on either side. Try Tcat Server - enterprise Tomcat made simple, with key features such as application provisioning and group deployment that save you time during development and eliminate tedious administrative tasks in production. Fortunately, the latest versions of WTP include very specific error messages to help you fix any potential problems, which are usually caused by re-named or missing JAR files.) If you installed Tomcat using a repackaged platform-specific distribution, such as those available from the RPM or JProject repositories, you may have some trouble getting Tomcat to start using these instructions. (Before ping in, please note that this tutorial assumes you have already successfully installed Tomcat on your machine, either by downloading and configuring a binary distribution from the Apache website or using the Apache Tomcat installer for Windows. In this guide, we'll walk you step by step through installing WTP and the Eclipse Tomcat plug-in, setting up Tomcat servers in Eclipse, and developing and deploying your first servlet. This set of components includes engines for managing, developing, compiling, and deploying web artifacts, as well as plugin support for all non-legacy versions of Apache Tomcat and a number of other application servers.
